Thailand: your questions answered
Do South Africans need a visa for Thailand?
South African passport holders can enter Thailand visa-free for tourism for up to 60 days. Your passport needs at least six months' validity and you may be asked for proof of onward travel and accommodation — we provide both. Requirements change, so confirm before you book flights.
How much spending money do I need for Thailand?
From R5,000 comfortably. Thailand is exceptional value once you land — street food costs a few rand, and a good meal out is under R150. Budget extra for optional activities: the elephant jungle walk, tiger sanctuary, ziplining and island day trips.
Is Thailand safe for solo female travellers?
Yes — Thailand is one of the easiest destinations in Asia for women travelling alone. Ordinary precautions apply, particularly around Patong nightlife. Most of our group travels solo.
What should I pack for Thailand?
Light, breathable clothing and plenty of it — the humidity means you'll change often. Swimwear, reef-safe sunscreen, insect repellent and comfortable sandals. For temples you need shoulders and knees covered; the Grand Palace in Bangkok enforces this strictly and will turn you away.
Is the elephant experience ethical?
We use a jungle walk sanctuary where you observe, feed and walk alongside the elephants rather than riding them. Riding is harmful and we do not offer it. This activity is optional and paid locally.
Can I drink the water in Thailand?
Stick to bottled water. Ice in restaurants and hotels is generally made from purified water and is fine. Street food is safe and excellent — eat where there's a queue of locals.
What is included in your Thailand tour?
Return flights from OR Tambo, shared accommodation, all breakfasts, a welcome dinner, one local lunch, the Phi Phi Island tour, a Phuket city tour, a tour experience leader and ground transport. The Bangkok extension adds internal flights, the Bangkok city tour and a farewell dinner.
Should I do Phuket only or add Bangkok?
Phuket alone is seven days and beach-focused. Adding Bangkok makes it eleven days and gives you a completely different side of Thailand — temples, floating markets, street food and Khao San Road. If it's your first time in Asia and you can take the leave, add Bangkok.
