All the long connections between cities are by high-speed train. Within each city we use local transport, which is affordable and easy.

What you need
- Passport must not expire before 28 March 2028
- Schengen visa — apply as early as you can. Through Capago or VFS it is usually quicker than people expect, but early gives you room to reapply if anything goes wrong
- Travellers under 18: unabridged birth certificate, valid passport, and an affidavit from any parent not travelling
- Recommended spending money from R10,000 — lunches and dinners are not included and Europe adds up quickly if you do not plan
- Shoulders and knees covered for the Vatican and churches
- Comfortable walking shoes — Rome, the Amalfi villages and Venice are all walked, not driven
