Turkey: your questions answered
Do South Africans need a visa for Turkey?
South African passport holders generally need a visa for Turkey, usually available as an e-visa. Requirements change, so confirm current rules before booking flights. Your passport needs at least six months' validity.
How much spending money do I need for Turkey?
From R6,000 for meals not included and daily costs. Add the hot-air balloon ride separately — it's the single biggest optional expense and the thing most people come for. Budget for site entrance fees too: the Blue Mosque is free, but Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace and Kaymakli all charge.
Is the hot-air balloon ride worth it?
It's the reason most people book Turkey. Flights leave before sunrise and are weather dependent — they're cancelled if wind conditions aren't right, and that happens. Book it for your first morning in Cappadocia so there's a second chance if the first is grounded.
What should I wear in Turkey?
Turkey is secular and Istanbul is cosmopolitan, so everyday dress is relaxed. For mosques, women need a headscarf and shoulders and knees covered; men need long trousers. Shoes come off at the door. Most major mosques provide scarves, but bring your own.
How cold does Cappadocia get?
Colder than people expect. It sits at around 1,000m and mornings drop close to freezing even in autumn. The balloon launch is before dawn in an open basket — bring a proper jacket, gloves and a beanie, not just a jersey.
Is Turkey safe for solo female travellers?
Istanbul and Cappadocia are both well-travelled tourist regions and our travellers report feeling comfortable. Ordinary city precautions apply in Istanbul. Bargaining in the Grand Bazaar can feel intense but isn't threatening — walking away is a normal part of it.
